Whiskey is a type of spirit alcohol beverage that is made from fermented grain mash. Whiskey’s production starts with malting. And it is the process where the barley that contains the starch needs to transform into soluble sugars to be able to make alcohol.

After the malting process, it is the process where the malt or grist is added to warm water. This is to extract the soluble sugar. When the malt combines with water, it is called “mash.” The mash will be placed into a large container called a “mash tun” and stirred for plenty of hours. When the wort got chilled and transferred to the large tanks called “washbacks,” fermentation takes place. In this process, the maker adds yeast to turn the sugar into alcohol. Usually, fermentation takes 48 hours. And the product will turn into a “wash.” This liquid has an alcohol strength of 5-10% alcohol by volume and can be a beer or ale.

For the last process, the “wash” will be distilled to become whiskey. In Scotland, they do distillation two times. While in Ireland, they do it three times. After the distillation process, it whiskey will be placed in an oak cask and stored. In Scotland, they save whiskey for a minimum time of 3 years to be legally called whiskey.
